Relationship to Kabbalah

The word "soul" can be used in various ways. As long as we know the underlying idea we will not be confused. Kabbalah uses the word "soul" as a comprehensive term with degrees within it.

The Kabbalah posits that the human soul has three elements, the nefesh, ru'ach, and neshamah. The nefesh is found in all humans, and enters the physical body at birth. It is the source of one's physical and psychological nature. The next two parts of the soul are not implanted at birth, but can be developed over time; their development depends on the actions and beliefs of the individual. They are said to only fully exist in people awakened spiritually. A common way of explaining the three parts of the soul is as follows:

Nefesh (נפש): the lower part, or "animal part", of the soul. It is linked to instincts and bodily cravings.
Ruach (רוח): the middle soul, the "spirit". It contains the moral virtues and the ability to distinguish between good and evil.
Neshamah (נשמה): the higher soul, or "super-soul". This separates man from all other life-forms. It is related to the intellect, and allows man to enjoy and benefit from the afterlife. This part of the soul is provided at birth and allows one to have some awareness of the existence and presence of God.

Another Essential Distinction

There is another essential distinction which if it is not recognized can cause much confusion.
Underlying the physical body is the "template " upon which the body is formed. This template is of an electrical nature (electromagnetic) and can be photographed by Kirlian photography.
Unfortunately, in the course of history some people have referred to this as the "soul". Here is where the confusion can begin because the "soul" is an even higher body.
The soul (self) is completely invisible to the senses (and science) and always will be invisible to them. (But it can be internally experienced and it's reality known.)
The first level of subtle body beyond the physical (which I called "template") is called in some systems the etheric body (or etheric double, etherial body or life force) and can be seen by the senses.
It is essential to distinguish it from the soul.
We also have the words "astral body" and "sidereal body" as a further possible source of confusion. For now I will associate the words "astral body" with "soul" and not even use the words "sidereal body".
I conclude that Sheldrake's morphic fields are a combination of the etheric and astral bodies (he does not distinguish them).

The World is Awakening

As we can see from the various quotes, articles and books that I have listed in this blog, there are a number of people and groups who are groping toward a new understanding. In their respective areas they are bumping up against the limits of their field of study and are dimly perceiving that there is more to the total of reality. This awareness often takes the form of paradoxes and oddities. These paradoxes stem from the dim realization that the questions which they have, cannot be answered by reference to just the level they have been considering.
For example the plenum is a recognition (albeit a dim one) of the fact that there is an invisible level of reality that permeates and influences (directs) the physical level.
Different people have given this different names, such as plenum (zero point field, quantum vacuum), akashic record (akashic field), astral plane, morphogenetic field, ether (etheric body), collective conscious, collective unconscious, holographic field, the Field, implicate order, subtle body etc.
So in various ways and in various areas there is an awakening.
To call it an "awakening" is both helpful and misleading. It is helpful in the sense that there is a growing realization that there is something more and that it is significant. It is misleading because it is not an actual awakening to the reality of it but a "knowing about" it from a distance.

The way the researchers have put it is misleading.

The vacuum is not empty. It is full. It is the underlying energy of everything. (It is not separate).

Some Important Distinctions

When we think about the quantum vacuum or the Akashic Field (the Akashic Record) it is easy to misconceive the nature of that level of reality.
One error is to simply think of it as just a huge energy field like electricity. Then we start to think that energy just randomly flows from one level into the other level as if it were just a giant electricity generator.
The other misconception is that it is simply like a film record of all the physical events that occurred throughout history.
Both these conceptions are inadequate.
It would be closer to say that it is the repository of the Platonic forms (ideas) or archetypes. That it is the repository of the giant patterns that we call "myths".
In other words it is not simply the record of the actual events but of the patterns and forms that physical events conform to and the personal manifestations of those patterns.

It is also important to realize that it is not impersonal.
It is a living intelligence with consciousness. In this respect, it is closer to being the mind of God. Everything is connected.
And it has its own time which is eternal (continuously present) in relation to our time.
(Actually this higher realm itself consists of further levels).

It is also important to keep in mind that it interpenetrates all of reality (all of matter, all of space).

Some Thoughts

Many traditions present the idea of reality as interpenetrating levels. Certainly we are aware of interpenetrating levels within us such as cells, molecules, electrons etc.
It is not as easy to conceptualize (and perceive) levels above us, but it can be done.
What science calls the quantum vacuum is a dim perception of a higher (deeper) level of reality. And that level of reality follows different rules than the levels we are used to.
The reason for that is that this higher level (astral level) has a greater degree of freedom. For example it is not constrained by time and space.
In this post I wish to focus on one very small (but important) aspect of this issue. The subject is time.
We often say that a higher level ("God" if you prefer) is beyond time and space.
It would be more accurate to say that "God" is beyond our time and space.
It ("He") still has its own time and space.
For example let us say that the sun is a higher level of being.
The sun level is beyond our time. All of human history is but a moment in the time (life) of the sun.
The sun experiences (sees) all of human history together.
As an analogy, imagine a DVD playing infinitely quickly so that all of history recorded on it (in full 3d) would take a fraction of a second. If you had the capability to take it all in, then you would be approximating to the level of the intelligence of the sun.
The word for this is "eternal". The word eternal is often thought of as an infinite extension in time. This is not the sense in which I am speaking. In the sense in which I am speaking, it is continuously present.
So in our analogy with the DVD, you as the watcher of the DVD are constantly present across all of the time of the DVD. Whenever someone on the DVD would look "up", you would be there unchanged. The rate of time is different between the two levels.
Science is dimly aware of this idea in the Theory of Relativity and in the unique nature of light which is beyond time.
As Bernhard Haisch put it:
"..let us ask ourselves how the universe of space and time would appear from the perspective of a beam of light. The laws of relativity are clear on this point. If you could ride a beam of light as an observer, all of space would shrink to a point, and all of time would collapse to an instant. In the reference frame of light, there is no space and time."
As Rodney Collin put it:
"If light can diffuse and endure undiminished for half-a-billion years, it can surely do so for ever. This means that all light, from a candle or from a super-sun, sooner or later fills the entire universe. Light is undiminishable, eternal and omnipresent. In every religion that existed these qualities have been recognized as divine. So that we are forced to the conclusion that light - actual sensible light - is indeed the direct vehicle of divinity: it is the consciousness of God."

In summary, "God" is eternal in relation to our time.

God experiences the richness of his potential through us because we are the incarnations of him in the physical realm."

An Essential Distinction

We must make an essential distinction.
On one side, we have the electromagnetic spectrum including visible light. This side can be measured by instruments.
On the other side, we have a "field" of energy (sometimes called "subtle energy") that can never be measured by any instrument and that can never be "seen" with our common physical senses. This does not mean that it can never be detected. Its effect can be seen in the material level of reality and it's actual presence can be intuited.
If we keep this essential distinction constantly in mind we can begin to distinguish between the various observations, experiments and experiences recorded in the literature throughout the course of human history.

Why a Paradigm Shifts

Thomas Kuhn in his ground breaking book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" showed that science does not progress in a continuous series of small increments but periodically shifts from one paradigm to another. The previous paradigm is completely discarded.
This is a fundamental idea in understanding the development of scientific ideas.
I would only add that these paradigms often occur when a new technology such as the microscope or telescope etc. allows us to see another level of reality and begin to understand the effect that level has on what we thought we understood previously.
